Bigirwa Welcomes Court-Ordered Vote Recount in Kamuli, Blames EC for Electoral Irregularities
Kamuli Municipality parliamentary aspirant Moses Bigirwa has welcomed a court decision to conduct a vote recount, citing widespread electoral irregularities and warning that failures by the Electoral Commission threaten national stability.

The Secretary General of the Common Man’s Party (CMP) and Kamuli Municipality parliamentary aspirant, Moses Bigirwa, has welcomed a court ruling ordering a vote recount in the Kamuli parliamentary race, citing alleged electoral fraud and incompetence within the Electoral Commission (EC).

Speaking during NBS Barometer on Tuesday, Bigirwa confirmed that the court had sanctioned the recount, describing it as a necessary step toward electoral justice.

“As of this evening, the court has ordered a vote recount in Kamuli,” he said.

Bigirwa argued that Parliament should be composed of leaders who genuinely represent the people and warned against attempts to sideline credible candidates through flawed electoral processes.

“Parliament needs people who can be a voice for the people; you cannot lock out people like me through questionable means,” he said.

He dismissed criticism directed at candidates who seek vote recounts, insisting that the concerns raised over the Kamuli election were legitimate.

“There are several irregularities in the elections, so don’t blame a given candidate for seeking a vote recount,” he said.

Bigirwa further cautioned that failures by the Electoral Commission could have far-reaching consequences for national stability.

“The incompetence of the Electoral Commission can throw the country into turmoil,” he said.

Calling for legal reforms, Bigirwa said Parliament must revisit and amend laws governing vote recounts to ensure transparency and fairness in future elections.

“It is high time Parliament amended the law governing vote recounting in an election,” he said.

He also accused electoral officials of lacking professionalism.

“Most officials of the electoral governing body are incompetent and unprofessional,” he said.

According to the Electoral Commission’s original results from the general elections held nationwide on January 15, 2026, Mastula Namatovu of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) was declared winner of the Kamuli Municipality parliamentary race with 8,582 votes.

She was followed by independent candidate Aziz Luwano with 3,389 votes, while incumbent MP Baroda Kayanga Watongola, running as an independent after losing the NRM nomination, garnered 3,353 votes.

The Common Man’s Party, chaired by former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa Sserunga, popularly known as “Mugati Gwa Butter,” has continued to gain national attention as one of Uganda’s emerging opposition movements.

Munyagwa has previously praised Bigirwa’s political influence, stating: “Bigirwa is the second biggest name in Busoga after Rebecca Kadaga.”

The court-ordered recount is expected to heighten political tension in Kamuli Municipality as stakeholders await the final outcome.
